Getting started
Install InstaDown, open Instagram, and refresh any Instagram tabs that were already open. Use the blue action on an authorized Feed post, Reel, Story, Highlight, or carousel. On a profile, hover or keyboard-focus a loaded video for its one-item action, select tiles and choose Download selected (N), or choose a limit and use Find & download up to N. Processing starts automatically in the background.
Profile limits and supported sections
User-requested discovery supports viewable Posts, Reels, Tagged, and Highlights with an explicit limit of 25, 50, or 100. Requests are paced. A 429 response stops additional requests behind a visible cooldown. InstaDown does not promise a complete account archive or bypass private or unavailable content.
Download status and controls
Items move through discovered, resolving, downloading, and then completed or failed; cancelled work is marked cancelled. The popup shows thumbnails, Chrome-reported progress, pause, resume, retry, and cancel controls. Completion is recorded only when Chrome reports it.
A download button is missing
Refresh Instagram once after installing or updating, then let the active media finish loading. InstaDown removes stale controls as Instagram changes Feed, Reel, Story, Highlight, carousel, or profile views.
A download was stopped
Each queue request is bound locally to creator, shortcode or media ID, surface context, and carousel position. The file is checked by media ID or shortcode, expected type, carousel position, and creator when Instagram supplies it. Surface is queue context rather than a separate property proved by the file. Wait for a rapidly changing view to settle, then retry.
A Story video is unavailable
InstaDown downloads a Story video only when Instagram supplies a complete progressive video file. It rejects separate audio-only streams and does not bypass unavailable media.
Folders, filenames, and dates
Files go under Chrome's normal Downloads location. Choose account/media-type, account-only, media-type-only, or flat organization. Compact, date-first, detailed, and custom filename presets include a live preview. The date token uses Instagram's source publication date when supplied.
Restart recovery and local records
Active extension-created downloads are normally reconciled by their Chrome download ID. During the narrow restart interval before a new ID is saved, InstaDown may inspect at most 20 recent filename/time candidates and attach only an exact URL/time match. It never changes unrelated downloads.
Queue data stays in local Chrome extension storage. The popup can retain up to 500 current-view discovery references and selection keys in session-only storage until the browser session ends or you clear the found-media list. InstaDown has no developer server, ads, analytics, or tracking.
